University Alliance Programs

Increasing Latino Recruitment, Retention and Graduation Rates

The University Alliance Program builds on the Hispanic Scholarship Fund’s 35-year history of success in Latino higher education to help university partners identify, recruit and retain college-bound Latinos. The program provides scholarships for eligible students, works closely with the university to recruit within the community, and provides support services on and off campus to assist in the admissions process and ensure the success of these students through graduation.

Through the University Alliance Program, HSF offers three avenues for collaboration and assistance:

CONSULTING: HSF helps review strategies for outreach, recruitment and retention of Latino students, and offers concrete recommendations for effective outcomes.

TRAINING: HSF delivers the tools to achieve higher Latino student admission yields and promote stronger student engagement with campus resources and services.

PARTNERING: HSF provides evaluation and support for programs that impact Latino enrollment and persistence to graduation.

A Case Study:
HSF University Alliance at the University of Georgia

In 2006, Latino students made up 19% of all high school graduates statewide but only 2% of all undergraduates enrolling at UGA. This same year HSF began a University Alliance initiative with UGA to recruit and retain Latino students from 16 target high schools in Georgia. The program provides HSF scholarships for Latino students who attend the university and an HSF contact housed on-campus who collaborates with UGA to deliver wrap-around services to Latino students and families.

An external program evaluator found that the recruitment activities carried out by HSF and UGA at target high schools had a statistically significant impact on enrollment during the pilot years. There was a 77% increase in Latino enrollment from target high schools during the pilot period from 2007-2009 over a five year baseline. By the third year of programming, the enrollment rate jumped to 153% over the baseline rate.

Over the four years of the program, 65% of HSF scholars came from low-income families and 60% were the first in their family to complete a college degree. The retention rate for these students is 96%, higher than the average for all students on campus and 70% of HSF scholars completed fall 2009 with a cumulative GPA above 3.0.

HSF can help you identify and directly communicate with eligible Latino high school juniors and seniors through more effective recruitment practices and partnerships. Additionally, all events and programs are family-centered and bilingual to ensure that parents are well informed about the process of going to college and applying for financial aid, and empowered to support their children.
