I am from Uruguay and a senior graduating in May 2008. I majored in Psychology and minored in Statistics. I am very involved on campus as I work in two research labs that work with monkeys and children. I tutored elementary school minority students last semester with CLASE (Center for Latino Achievement and Success in Education). I am also an HSF Peer Counselor, helping 12 Hispanic high school juniors with the difficult process of applying to college. I dance on the competitive dance team at UGA (The Red Hotz). I plan on staying at UGA for graduate school in the School Psychology doctoral program in the fall of 2008.
I'm grateful to have received an HSF scholarship as it really helped me achieve my goals. My advice is to APPLY FOR AS MANY SCHOLARSHIPS AS YOU CAN! I would also advise that you get involved in clubs and activities on campus. It is a great way to meet people especially on large campuses like UGA. Participating in extra curricular activities also looks great on a resume or CV.
The Hispanic population is greatly underrepresented in higher education, especially in graduate schools and in university faculty. I am thankful for HSF for providing me with so many opportunities. I love working with HSF through the peer counseling program. It's a great program with a wonderful mission. I hope that the HSF peer counseling program continues in the future because it really does make a difference.
