Steps for Success Saturdays

Steps for Success Saturdays serve middle and high school students as well as their families.  The workshops are designed to help students finish high school prepared for postsecondary education, including college enrollment, and to teach parents how to be advocates for their children’s postsecondary success.  College representatives, community leaders and HSF staff lead the student and parent workshops.

Workshop topics for students include preparing and paying for college, preparing for standardized tests, university profiles, writing personal statements, researching financial aid and a community college transfer plan.

Parent workshop topics include paying for college and preparing your students for college admission.

The day also includes a college fair that draws recruiters from colleges, universities and vocational programs from all over the country.  Breakfast and lunch are served.

Hispanic Youth Institute

The Hispanic Youth Institute (HYI) is a national pre-college program that begins the Hispanic Scholarship Fund’s pipeline of programs which motivate students to graduate from college, pursue professional careers and give back to their communities.  HYI summer residencies are scheduled to run in five communities in 2013: Greater Washington, DC, Los Angeles, CA, New Mexico, Dallas, TX and the Silicon Valley, CA.  The program is primarily targeted to rising sophomores and juniors in high school.  Regional restrictions may apply.

Beginning in the summer, 100-150 high school students per region will experience a university campus through a three-day, two-night college empowerment program where they will learn to overcome both real and perceived barriers to college access.  The students participate in college and career workshops, connect with local Hispanic professionals, meet college admissions officers, interact with near-peer mentors, listen to inspirational speakers, and compete for scholarships.  Throughout the on-campus experience, the students build their confidence and receive practical tools to help them along their pathway to college.
