Program Assistant, Gates Millennium Scholars Program, Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Full Bio

Karen Urbina is a Program Assistant of the Gates Millennium Scholars Program (GMS), in which HSF is a partner, and is part of the GMS awarding staff at HSF. In this role, she serves as a resource for HSF-GMS Scholars who have questions about the financial processing status of the scholarship award, deferment options, and graduate program forms. She is also the first point of contact for students, parents, and members of the general community who have inquiries about the GMS Program and the application process. Ms. Urbina also assists with the promotion and outreach efforts of the GMS Ambassador Program.
Prior to joining HSF, Ms. Urbina worked as an Academic Advisor for a TRIO Talent Search Program serving over 600 low-income, first-generation middle and high school students. She maintained a caseload of program participants attending Huntington Park High School, Garfield High School, and Roosevelt High School; all in the East L.A. area. Ms. Urbina provided academic, career, and financial aid counseling and encouraged students to graduate high school and research, apply, and enroll in a post-secondary institution.
Ms. Urbina is involved in other non-profit organizations aimed at increasing the college going culture with young Latina girls, through the annual Latina Youth Leadership Conference. The one-day conference provides self-esteem workshops to empower the girls, and young women to realize their full potential both in their personal lives and their academics.  Ms. Urbina enjoys and continues to mentor and advise students in all aspects of the college application process.
Ms. Urbina attended California State University, Los Angeles and is actively involved in her community.

I am passionate in helping first generation students and their families achieve their educational goals. It is very rewarding to work with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the dedicated team that makes this reality come true for me every day.
